🧮 Methodology: How the EV math works
Formula at a glance
Pre-tax break-even = stored EV threshold Post-tax break-even ~= Pre-tax break-even / (1 - federal tax - state tax) Net EV now = modeled expected value per ticket at current jackpot For multi-state games, post-tax break-even is shown as a best-to-worst state range.

Lottery Odds Calculator FAQ
How does the lottery odds calculator work?
Choose a lottery, prize tier, lines per draw, and number of draws. The calculator uses the published odds for that tier to estimate your chance of at least one hit, expected hits, total ticket cost, and the number of lines associated with a 50% chance.
How do more lines and draws change my chance of winning?
Each valid line is another independent chance at the selected prize tier. The calculator combines those chances across your selected playing horizon. Buying more lines raises the cumulative probability, but it does not guarantee a win or make any individual line more likely to win.
What do lottery prize-tier odds mean?
Prize-tier odds describe the chance that one line matches the combination required for a specific prize, such as the jackpot or a smaller fixed prize. Different tiers have different odds and payout rules, so the calculator lets you examine each one separately.
What is lottery expected value?
Expected value is the modeled long-run average return of a ticket after weighting possible prizes by their probabilities and subtracting ticket cost. It is a comparison measure, not a prediction of what your next ticket will return.
What is a break-even lottery jackpot?
The break-even jackpot is the estimated advertised jackpot at which modeled ticket value approaches ticket cost under the stated assumptions. Taxes, the cash-value ratio, prize sharing, and other model inputs can push the practical threshold above the headline pre-tax figure.
Do taxes and payout choice change my odds?
No. Taxes, cash versus annuity, and prize sharing change what a win may be worth, not the probability of matching the winning numbers. The payout panel shows value separately so it does not confuse prize value with the chance of winning.
Does the prize simulation predict future results?
No. The simulation is one random illustration of spending and prize outcomes using the selected game's published odds. Each run can look different, and none predicts future drawings or shows that a number or prize is due.
